Summary
Our 601 XL-B was built in California in 2009 by a 3-time homebuilder who developed cancer during the final part of the build. The FAA gave him Operating Limitations with only a 5 hour requirement for Phase 1 operations. Indeed, the Phase 1 logbook sign-off was accomplished at 6.7 hr in 2011. The donor purchased the plane in 2015 and performed a pre-buy inspection and had some other maintenance performed. At the end of May 2015, the donor flew the 601 from CA to Palestine, TX (20.6 hours). The last Condition Inspection was performed 11/20/15. The donor developed some medical issues and last flew the plane in 2016. It has been hangered in Palestine TX until we had the wings removed and trailered to our hangar in March, because we couldn’t find a mechanic to do a Condition Inspection at that location.
In going through the 601s’ records, we found it wasn’t just the basic kit:

Summary (continued)
We’ve gone through the plane and found some items that need attention (some we’ve resolved and others we haven’t addressed):
- 9 year old Battery: Will replace battery
- Weak Canopy hydraulic lift struts: Ordered set of 60 lb struts to replace the 40 lb struts
- Borescoped the engine and found some mild surface corrosion, plan to perform an engine run and then perform compression checks
· Horizontal Stab Attachment: Discovered significant “wobble”, looseness of the stab attachment. On closer inspection found a crack in the rear attachment structure. The front left attachment also seems loose. We plan on removing the stab to better determine the root cause. This damage might have occurred during the transport.
At this point, we’re planning to sell it “As Is” and let the buyer trailer it home, repair the Horizontal Stab attachments, reinstall the wings and complete the Condition Inspection. The MLG is 7’ 8” so it will fit on an 8’ wide trailer or in an 8’ wide moving truck.
