Summary

Our 601 XL-B was built in California in 2009 by a 3-time homebuilder who developed cancer during the final part of the build.  The FAA gave him Operating Limitations with only a 5 hour requirement for Phase 1 operations.  Indeed, the Phase 1 logbook sign-off was accomplished at 6.7 hr in 2011.  The donor purchased the plane in 2015 and performed a pre-buy inspection and had some other maintenance performed.  In May 2015, the donor flew the 601 from CA to Palestine, TX (20.6 hours).  The last Condition Inspection was performed 11/20/15.  The donor developed some medical issues and last flew the plane in 2016.  It has been hangered in Palestine TX until we had the wings removed and trailered to our hangar (Chesterfield, MO, KSUS) in March, because we couldn’t find a mechanic to do a Condition Inspection at that location.

In going through the 601s’ records, we found it wasn’t just the basic kit:

Summary (continued)

We’ve gone through the plane and found some items (some we’ve resolved and others we haven’t addressed):
  • 9 year old Battery: Purchased and installed Odyssey battery
  • Weak Canopy hydraulic lift struts: Purchased and installed set of 60 lb struts to replace the 40 lb struts
  • Borescoped the engine and found some mild surface corrosion (see photos), performed an engine run (see video) and then perform compression checks
  • Ran the engine (see movie) and did compression check (80, 79, 79, 78, 78, 77)
  • Issues remaining, being sold “As Is” (see detailed photos):
    1. Horizontal Stab Attachment: Noticed significant “wobble” of the stab.  On closer inspection, found a crack in the rear attachment structure (part 6T2-3).  Then we found the front left stab attachment (6T2-1) has an elongated hole and an extra hole in it.  The corresponding left forward fuselage fitting (683-3) also has 2 holes.  We determined that all these parts need to be replaced and in order to accomplish that the stabilator would need the rivets drilled to gain access.   We didn’t remove the stabilator, as the elevator trim wire is a single piece from the actuator to the panel switch.  We will let the buyer determine how he wants to handle this disassembly.
    2. A borescope of the fuel tank revealed some aluminum shavings.
    3. Both spars have an extra row of holes drilled in them apparently for the rib closest to the fuselage.
    4. When installing the new battery, one of the screw nutplates would not accept a screw. Rather than further investigating, we just inserted a cleco.
At this point, we’re selling it “As Is”, to let the buyer trailer it home, address the Issues, reassemble it and complete the Condition. The MLG is 7’ 8” wide, so it will fit on an 8’ wide trailer or in an 8’ wide moving truck.
