Summary
Here is a beautiful rebuild of a classic 1946 Ercoupe that is perfect for a mechanic/owner or a buyer that has access to someone with fabric/paint skills.
For those not familiar with 415-Cs, these early Ercoupes were marketed (see the ads for the 1040s) as non-spinnable.and easy to fly because there were no rudder pedals. There was only the control yoke to turn the plane (on the ground or in the air) and raise or lower the nose and only a single pedal on the floor, the brake! The Ercoupe has 360 degree canopy view with slide down windows providing a convertible-like ride! With the economical engine burning only ~ 5 gal/hr, they still would cruise around 100 mph. 415-Cs are also now Sport Pilot eligible (only 1,260 gross weight),
In 2012, our Ercoupe was totally disassembled, inspected, any corrosion treated, many parts replaced or reconditioned and then rebuilt (see 4 page logbook entry for all the details). The engine was upgraded from 75 to 85 HP during its overhaul in 2014. The wooden Sensenich prop was installed in 2015. The plane now has 1,576 TT (airframe and engine) with only 93 hrs since the 2012 rebuild, 79 SMOH and 73 hours on the prop. The paint is in excellent condition: bright red with black, maroon and gold striping. The interior is in excellent condition: Tan fabric and vinyl. It has a Com Radio and encoding transponder (no ADS-B).
We had previously sold this Ercoupe for $39,000, but were surprised by an issue identified during the pre-buy inspection. When the coupe was rebuilt in 2012 the outer wing panels were purchased by the owner form a 3rd party, already covered. The logbook entry says they were found to be airworthy and installed. The pre-buy inspector found that the right rear spar had a crack that was stop drilled and had a doubler riveted as a repair (see photos). Both that inspector and our IA were in agreement that the repair would not be approved in an Annual Inspection. Possible resolution includes:
- Replacement of the area of the spar with a Univair SA-24-R and patching the fabric
- Replacing the right wing rear spar and recovering that wing
- Replacing the outer right wing with another one and painting to match
Since we don’t have the personnel with the fabric and painting skills needed to correct the repairs, we’ve decided to sell it “As Is”. Our maintenance director believes the current condition is flight worthy for a Special Flight Permit and will request one for the buyer (after all it has been flying that way for 13 years).
So if you are a mechanic, or know of one that will work with you, you can own this beautiful Ercoupe!
Additional Equipment Installed/Information
- Complete Log Books starting 3/4/1958 (The logs from 1946 thru early 1958 were lost. There is a sign-off in Aircraft and Engine Logs stating 565 hr were flown between 1946 and 1958.)
- Donor owned the plane for last 10 years.
- Major aircraft rebuild performed in 2012 (less than 100 hrs ago). Engine overhauled in 2014.
- Title Search: No liens
- Outboard Right Wing Rear Spar Issue: A pre-buy inspection discovered a previous repair that was deemed insufficient (see photos). We don’t have the expertise to remedy the issue so we are selling it “As Is” and will provide a ferry light logbook sign-off. Per the logbook entry, the outboard wing panels were “buyer provided”, deemed airworthy, and installed during the 2012 rebuild.
